2020/21 Virtual Competitions

Membership update: September 10, 2020

The SWA has received questions regarding its social media post on Saturday, September 5th, re: 2020/21 Virtual Competitions. The questions were reviewed by the SWA and the Officials Committee, with the following answers provided below:

1. Video submission through Instagram

The challenges in coordinating virtual competitions for the upcoming season are varied and numerous. Due to differences in video quality between various forms of submission, limiting submissions to our Instagram channel ensures officiating accuracy is not impacted by differences in video quality. In addition, since officiating for virtual meets will be done using physical distancing, it is imperative videos are submitted in a manner publicly accessible, enabling meet officials with the ability to access the video for review. Videos posted on Instagram allows for these goals to be met.

When submitting your video (s), please indicate your full name.

September 14 – 20, 2020

Video submissions must be sent to the SWA via Instagram: MUST INCLUDE THE HASHTAG #2020SWAopener in the description

Additionally, all video submissions MUST TAG @sask_weightlifting in the post

October 5 – 12, 2020

Video submissions must be sent to the SWA via Instagram: MUST INCLUDE THE HASHTAG #2020SWAopener in the description

Additionally, all video submissions MUST TAG @sask_weightlifting in the post

2. Number of Submissions

Lifters are encouraged to submit more than one lift, per discipline, in the event a video is judged as being a no lift.

3. Weight Submission through Instagram

Lifters have the option of submitting their weight video through Instagram or through email, to: info@saskweightlifting.com

4. Showing Elbows and Knees

The purpose of this rule is to prevent athletes from wearing baggy clothing that covers the elbows and/or knees, which would obstruct the officials’ ability to accurately judge each lift. For example, the use of knee sleeves is acceptable, so long as the angle of the knees is not obstructed by the sleeve (no different than an in person meet).

Phase 3 Reopen Saskatchewan

The information provided below, was taken from a memo sent to Sask Sport/Provincial Sport Governing Bodies from Richelle Bourgoin, from the Ministry of Trade and Export, within the Government of Saskatchewan.  The information supports the SWA's sanctioning of its members to resume training in gyms and fitness facilities, in accordance with the guidelines outlined in Phase 3 of Reopen Saskatchewan.

Sports teams may resume fitness training (typically what we would refer to as strength and conditioning) immediately under the gym and fitness guidelines in Phase 3 of the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan.

While we recognize the plan does not provide the clarity needed by stakeholders, we are also working on guidelines for indoor and outdoor team-based sport and recreation activities and we expect that to be made available in the coming week. A number of sport-based activities (such as gymnastics, martial arts, dance) have inquired about their ability to resume practice – BRT has provided the advice that with the modifications required such as eliminating contact, reducing gathering sizes, they can resume.

In the meantime, we would encourage your member organizations to bring their athletes together under the existing guidelines (which would prohibit scrimmage, contact, etc.) providing they maintain social distancing, observe limitations on public gatherings, etc.

In essence, your interpretation of training is aligned with the intent of the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan and we will work with the Ministry of Health to ensure future updates reflect the clarity required, but I hope this provides you with confirmation to be able to support your stakeholders return to practice.

Thank you.
